| WHAT´S THE BILINGUAL PROGRAMME? |
| ¿QUÉ ES EL PROGRAMA BILINGÜE? |
In 1996 the Ministry of Education and Science and the British Council signed an agreement to introduce an integrated curriculum in Spanish State Schools. In this way Bilingual education was established in 43 state schools with 1200 pupils aged three and four.Since 1996 Bilingual Education has slowly but surely been introduced at every level of education from age three through sixteen in the project schools.
The project is in its fifteenth year, and the first groups of children, now aged seventeen and eighteen are clearly demonstrating the benefits of being taught a curriculum in both Spanish and English, where they study approximately the same number of hours each week. A recent evaluation report has noted the following successes:
- interest and motivation on the part of the children

the enthusiasm of the parents
- a growing sense of satisfaction from head teachers in schools, many of which are in economically deprived areas
- learning in two languages not only contributes to the progress of the children in their first language, but would appear to assist the children’s cognitive development.

En 1996 el MInisterio de Educación y Ciencia y el British Council firmaron un convenio cuyo objetivo era desarrollar u currículo integrado en centros públicos españoles. De esta forma se ponía en marcha un novedoso programa que hacía llegar la educación bilingue a los colegios. Esta experiencia, iniciada en 43 centros con 1200 alumnos de tres y cuatro años, primero con muchas carencias y después con más confianza, ha ido consolidándose en las distintas etapas de la enseñanza obligatoria.
El programa lleva funcionando quince años, y los primeros grupos de alumnos que empezaron con 3 años y que tienen ahora diecisiete y dieciocho, están demostrando los beneficios de haber aprendido el currículo en ambos idiomas: español e inglés a partes iguales.
Un reciente estudio ha dado a conocer los logros del proyecto hasta la fecha:
- alto grado de motivación por parte de los alumnos
- entusiasmo de los padres.
- satisfacción en aumento por parte de los profesores de colegios ubicados en zonas económicamente deprimidas.
- el aprendizaje en dos idiomas no sólo contribuye al desarrollo de los niños en su lengua materna, sino que también ayuda a los chavales en su desarrollo cognitivo.
